Co-owner Jim Ratcliffe revealed that Manchester United is currently covering half of Sancho's salary and is obligated to pay £17 million this summer.

Sancho thrived in the Bundesliga as a teenager, forging an impressive partnership with Marco Reus and becoming a driving force for Dortmund. His skill set—marked by exceptional dribbling, sharp ball control, and excellent vision—allowed him to excel in Germany's top league. Nonetheless, Dortmund currently faces an existential crisis, compounded by the potential of missing out on European football and the financial repercussions that follow. Reports indicate a potential loss of up to €30 million should they fail to qualify for European competition.
The departure of key figures like Reus and Mats Hummels left a leadership void in the squad, with current players like Nico Schlotterbeck and Julian Brandt not yet stepping into those crucial roles fully. As the club looks to rebuild, integrating a player like Sancho, who possesses the necessary experience and skills, would be beneficial.
Moreover, Dortmund's ongoing need for experienced wide players has intensified the conversation around Sancho’s return. Presently, there are only unseasoned options available, underscoring the necessity for an experienced talisman who could reinvigorate the attacking line-up.
The Financial Tightrope for Dortmund
Even with the potential financial windfall from participating in the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA, which could net the club approximately €50 million, Dortmund faces the challenge of reducing its wage costs while needing key reinforcements. The club must balance its budget while contemplating the addition of players who can make an immediate impact.
Amidst the uncertainty surrounding his career, Jadon Sancho presents a calculated risk for Borussia Dortmund. He represents a chance to reignite his career at 24, an age where many players reach their peak potential. However, to align his substantial wage demands with Dortmund's financial strategy will require further negotiations by Kehl and Lars Ricken.
