Chelsea Injury Update: Caicedo, Martínez and Hato Status Before Sunderland Match

Chelsea’s main selection question ahead of Sunday’s trip to Sunderland is Moisés Caicedo’s availability. Xabi Alonso said the midfielder felt discomfort after leaving last weekend’s match against Manchester United, but ruled out the calf injury that had been speculated about. That distinction offers some reassurance, though it doesn’t establish whether Caicedo can play: discomfort can still affect a player’s readiness, and Chelsea haven’t yet completed their assessment.

“We expect to check if it’s a different situation tomorrow,” Alonso said. “It’s more of a discomfort than a calf [injury].” Chelsea will assess Caicedo after their final training session before deciding whether he can play. The timing leaves little room for a longer evaluation, so the decision is likely to depend on how he responds to training and whether the staff believe he can contribute without aggravating the problem.

Martínez could return in goal

Emiliano Martínez is back in training and could be considered to replace Mike Penders. He has missed several matches since breaking his jaw in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Everton, making Sunday a possible return point rather than a confirmed one. Training with the squad is an encouraging step, but the club still has to judge whether he’s ready for the demands of a match.

Alonso said Martínez has trained well and has worked ahead of schedule to rejoin the squad. Chelsea will make a final decision on Sunday after reviewing his condition following Saturday’s training session. That leaves the goalkeeper question open until close to kickoff, with Penders remaining a possible option if Martínez’s recovery hasn’t progressed far enough.

Several players remain unavailable

João Pedro and Maxence Lacroix are not expected to train before the Sunderland game. Alonso said the club will review their recovery during the two-week international break, with a clearer update expected ahead of Chelsea’s match against Leeds. The break gives the club time to reassess their progress, but the current information doesn’t offer a firm return date for either player.

Jorrel Hato will also miss Sunday’s fixture. The left-back’s back issue is taking longer to resolve than initially expected, and Alonso said it could be several more weeks before he returns, possibly after the international break. That extended timeline matters because it limits the manager’s options at the position beyond this single match.

Those absences extend the list of players who missed the Manchester United match, where Pedro and Hato were among those unavailable with minor injuries. The gap between an initial description of a problem and a later estimate of recovery can be difficult to read from the outside; here, Alonso’s update makes clear that Hato’s issue is lasting longer than Chelsea first anticipated. For the other players, the club is still relying on the international break as a checkpoint.

Anselmino joins Argentina squad

Aaron Anselmino has trained for more than a week and has been called up by Argentina for friendlies against Uruguay and Costa Rica. Alonso said the defender has improved over the past 10 days and described the call-up as important for him. The international selection is a positive sign of progress, though it doesn’t answer whether Anselmino is ready to play for Chelsea against Sunderland.

He did not confirm whether Anselmino could feature on Sunday. That uncertainty leaves the defender’s immediate role unresolved, even as his return to training and national-team call-up point to a step forward. This is more significant than it looks: squad availability isn’t just a list of names, but a question of who can be trusted to handle a full match or specific minutes.

What the fitness picture means for Sunday

Sunday’s match is Chelsea’s final fixture before the November international break. Martínez’s return could offer Alonso another option, but Caicedo’s late fitness check and the longer recovery timelines for Pedro, Lacroix and Hato will shape the manager’s available squad. The updates describe several different stages of recovery, from a possible return to training through to an absence expected to last several more weeks.

Here's the thing: a break in the schedule can create time for injured players to recover, but it doesn’t guarantee that they’ll be ready for the next match. Chelsea’s next clearer checkpoints are the final training session before Sunderland and the review of recovery during the break, with an update expected ahead of Leeds. If you're working in this space, the practical distinction is between being back in training and being ready for competitive minutes.

Much will hinge on the final checks. And yet, no firm return dates have been given for the players still unavailable.
