Robin Le Normand’s costly error and Konrad Laimer’s goal condemned Atlético to a 2-0 home loss, with Bayern controlling key stretches.

Atlético Madrid’s 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich at the Metropolitano turned on a familiar fault line: individual mistakes punished a team that hadn’t found a reliable response to Bayern’s pressure. Lennart Karl opened the scoring in the 53rd minute after Robin Le Normand lost the ball near his own box. Konrad Laimer added a second around 20 minutes later, taking advantage of another lapse in Atlético’s marking.
Diego Simeone’s side had some promising moments, particularly through Marcos Llorente and a direct approach that initially gave Alexander Sørloth a way into the game. But Atlético struggled to sustain its attacks, and the changes came only after Bayern had taken control. The result leaves the team with plenty to examine, from Le Normand’s mistake to a midfield that faded as the match wore on.
One error changed the match
Jan Oblak reached a notable milestone on the night, making his 553rd appearance for Atlético to draw level with Adelardo Rodríguez for the second-most appearances in club history. His work with the ball remained less assured: he completed only 33 percent of his long passes in the first half. Still, he reacted sharply to Joshua Kimmich’s effort just after halftime and later got a touch on Dayot Upamecano’s deflected shot to send it onto the crossbar. Karl’s finish, chipped over Oblak after Le Normand’s giveaway, offered little chance to recover. Laimer’s strike went in at the near post, where Oblak had left space. Rating: 5
Le Normand’s night is defined by the moment that gave Bayern its opening goal. He had been assigned to Harry Kane, the recently crowned Ballon d’Or winner, and had largely avoided major trouble in the first half apart from a foul on Kane at midfield. Then, under pressure in his own area, he got tangled up with Pubill and tried to dribble clear. Karl took the ball and finished. The mistake was avoidable, and its cost was immediate. Rating: —
Pubill had an uneven outing at right-back before shifting into central defense after the goal. He looked uncomfortable against Bayern’s wide threat, including when Alphonso Davies dispossessed Julián Álvarez and drove forward for a major first-half chance. Pubill did create an opportunity for Sørloth with a cross, but the forward couldn’t bring it under control. His move inside suited him better. Rating: 4
Dávid Hancko supplied a steadier presence. He made a last-second block to deny Kane what looked like a certain opening goal, and finished with eight clearances and three recoveries. Alejandro Grimaldo, meanwhile, handled Michael Olise reasonably well early on, recording two tackles and winning four duels. His contribution going forward was limited, with Atlético’s attacking problems reflected in his lost possession. Hancko: 6. Grimaldo: 5

Midfield energy didn’t last
Llorente was one of Atlético’s more effective players. Starting in midfield with Morten Hjulmand suspended and Johnny Cardoso unavailable through injury, he made five recoveries and won two ground duels in a strong first half. He also had a clear look at goal after 65 minutes, but his effort lacked power and Manuel Neuer saved comfortably. The chance was a reminder of how little Atlético created once Bayern tightened its grip. Rating: 6
Pablo Barrios tried to push through Bayern’s lines and sent a shot toward goal from Hancko’s assist, only for it to be deflected behind for a corner. He had difficulty shaping the game, then faded after the break and came off following Laimer’s goal. Rating: 5
Álex Baena had a particularly difficult first half. He lost seven of nine ground duels and was beaten on the dribble four times, while also switching off as Laimer helped create a major chance for Kane during Bayern’s best spell before the break. His performance never recovered. Rating: 2
Álvarez also struggled to make his mark. He sent an early attempt wide of Neuer, then lost the ball to Davies along Atlético’s right side; Karl blazed the resulting chance over the bar. Álvarez won only one of eight ground duels in the first half. He did set up Llorente’s opportunity in the 66th minute, but that was his clearest contribution before he was substituted. Rating: 2

Atlético’s attacking plan lost its edge
Sørloth’s inclusion was a notable choice, and the reasoning was clear: Atlético wanted a forward who could compete physically with Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah and provide an outlet over Bayern’s press. He gave the team a direct option and won five aerial duels by the end of the first half, though only two before the break. Pubill’s cross presented a chance to shoot, but Sørloth mishandled it and sent the ball backward toward Baena. Rating: 4
Giuliano Simeone brought effort and movement, repeatedly trying to reach long balls, but Davies proved a difficult matchup. The Bayern full-back beat him late in the first half and won a free kick. Giuliano’s work rate was apparent; so was his frustration, as he spent much of the second half appealing for fouls. Rating: 3
The substitutes arrived in a cluster after 58 minutes: Kang-in for Baena, Koke for Le Normand, and Ademola Lookman for Sørloth. Kang-in showed quick feet and tried to take charge, but couldn’t change the match. Koke’s return after three weeks out coincided with a rise in Atlético’s urgency, though the team was already chasing the game. Lookman failed to track Laimer for the second goal and made little impact when Atlético tried to respond. Kang-in: 4. Koke: 4. Lookman: —
Javi Mendoza and David came on after 74 minutes, replacing Barrios and Álvarez. Mendoza had a brief chance to display his technical ability. David had little time and few opportunities, but recorded as many touches in Bayern’s box in 15 minutes as Álvarez managed in more than 70. Neither received a rating. Mendoza: N/A. David: N/A
Simeone’s response came late
Simeone’s direct approach had some logic while Atlético could get Sørloth involved, and the team showed more urgency after the substitutions. But Bayern had already spent long stretches of the first half smothering Atlético’s attack, and the coach made no halftime adjustment. His three changes came only after Karl’s goal, leaving little time for them to alter the match before Laimer scored again.
Sørloth’s start was a calculated gamble that produced an outlet, though not enough attacking threat to justify the selection on its own. Le Normand’s error made the decision to keep him on especially costly, and the delayed changes left Atlético reacting to Bayern rather than changing the conditions of the game. Rating: 2
Atlético’s next challenge is to turn its flashes of direct play into a sustained threat while reducing the defensive mistakes that gave Bayern its opening. Llorente’s performance showed the team could compete in stretches; the scoreline showed how little room it had for errors against this opponent.
