Diego Simeone expects Bayern’s pressure to test Atlético, while calling for balance and backing Ademola Lookman to regain form.

Diego Simeone’s ideal script for Atlético Madrid against Bayern Munich is an extended spell of attacking football. His actual expectation is less romantic: Bayern will force the hosts to defend, withstand pressure and find ways to play through it. Ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League match at the Metropolitano, the Atlético coach made clear that handling those difficult stretches may matter as much as imposing his team’s own game.
“I’d like us to attack for 80 minutes, leaving the last 10 for them to come at us for a while,” Simeone said, describing a high press, sustained passing and a goal built from 20 touches, like Atlético’s recent effort against Levante. He then turned to the challenge in front of his team: Bayern are powerful, he said, and press especially well when they win the ball back.
That assessment gives the match a practical shape. Simeone wants Atlético to dictate play, but he expects Bayern to interrupt that plan and create uncomfortable moments. The task, as he framed it, is to break out of the visitors’ pressure and steer the contest towards situations where Atlético can hurt them.
A demanding opponent and a focused approach
Simeone described Bayern as one of the strongest sides in the competition. He also spoke about approaching the occasion with excitement and joy, while remaining clear-eyed about the difficulty of the opposition. His comments carried the perspective of a coach who has spent 15 years at Atlético and is conscious of what the club, its supporters and its people have experienced during that time.
That history brings emotion, but Simeone’s immediate focus remains the match itself. He said Atlético must find a direction for the game that gives them opportunities to cause Bayern problems. The balance between ambition and discipline is familiar territory for his team, and it will be tested by Bayern’s ability to apply pressure after possession changes hands.
The Metropolitano crowd is part of that plan. Coming off a win over Levante, Atlético now return home for a match Simeone called important. He hopes the supporters will build their energy as the game develops and that the players can carry that atmosphere onto the pitch. His message suggests the home crowd can help Atlético through the difficult phases he expects, as well as lift the team when it has a chance to attack.
Simeone keeps the Champions League final in perspective
Asked about the prospect of playing the Champions League final at the Metropolitano, Simeone praised the opportunity for the club but resisted looking too far ahead. He said he hoped the question would not recur at every press conference, adding that Atlético are taking the competition one match at a time.
Reaching the final, he said, would require a great deal of work and would be difficult. For now, the priority is to prepare properly and concentrate on each match. It is a measured response to a major occasion: the venue matters, but it does not change the scale of the challenge Atlético face on the way there.
Balance remains the team’s main improvement area
When asked what Atlético need to improve, Simeone gave a concise answer: balance. For him, the challenge is maintaining a consistent level of performance across matches. It is a demanding standard, particularly when the team is moving between domestic fixtures and Champions League opposition of Bayern’s calibre, but it remains the area he says the coaching staff will keep working on.
That emphasis also connects to his expectations for Tuesday. Atlético may not control the game for long stretches, so they will need to stay organised while under pressure and make their attacking moments count. Simeone’s imagined 80 minutes of pressure is a goal; his more immediate concern is ensuring the team can manage the game that actually unfolds.
Simeone praises Harry Kane’s development
Simeone spoke warmly about Harry Kane, praising his goalscoring and the way he has developed over his career. He said Kane has learned to find better positions while retaining his central strength as a finisher. He also pointed to the striker’s commitment to helping his team when it is in difficulty.
Simeone’s praise extended beyond Kane’s impact on the pitch. He described the forward as an example for young players, saying his career shows how talent and hard work can lead to the highest level. Kane’s threat gives Atlético another problem to solve, but Simeone’s remarks also reflected respect for a player whose influence reaches beyond scoring.
Lookman has Simeone’s backing through a difficult spell
Ademola Lookman’s form has not developed as he would have hoped, according to Simeone, but the coach rejected the idea that a rough patch should define the forward’s season. He compared Lookman’s situation with difficult spells experienced by Julián Alvarez last year and Antoine Griezmann when goals were not coming. In each case, Simeone said, the players worked through it.
He stressed Lookman’s value in one-on-one situations in the final third, where Atlético can create chances to score. Simeone said he has faith in the forward and wants him to avoid becoming frustrated by the current run of form. Goals, assists and confidence can return, he said, but reaching that point requires persistence through the quieter stretches.
The coach’s comments make clear that he sees Lookman’s contribution in terms broader than recent output. Beating defenders in dangerous areas gives Atlético an attacking option, even when the final action has not yet followed. Simeone is hoping that patience and continued work will help turn those moments into goals and assists.

Midfield selection remains open
Simeone said Obed Vargas has been working hard and showing enthusiasm, while competing with several established options for a midfield place. He named Pablo Barrios, Johnny Cardoso, Koke, Morten Hjulmand, Marcos Llorente and Rodrigo Mendoza among the players available in that area. The coaching staff, he said, look for training performances that make a player’s selection compelling.
The pool is complicated by absences and returning players. Cardoso and Hjulmand are unavailable, while Koke is coming back and eager to play. Simeone also mentioned Mendoza, Vargas and Llorente as options, noting that the match could be long and that the staff still had time to decide how to use the players at their disposal.
Those choices will shape how Atlético respond when Bayern press and how much control the hosts can find in midfield. Simeone has not settled publicly on a lineup, but his comments point to competition for places and a decision that will depend on the final preparation before kickoff. For Atlético, the measure of success will be whether they can keep their balance, withstand Bayern’s strongest spells and create enough openings to make the home atmosphere count.
